Kokutangaza is collaborating with educators and activists such as Langa Sarakikiya in order to utilize art to tackle social issues with the youth. There are various things in society we have to address and sometimes even combat in order to safe guard and uplift our communities. For now our “weapon of choice” is drama and theater arts.

The teenage years is often when soul searching begins, and we as adults want to help shed light on various things that still remain a mystery for these budding young people in order to help nurture their journey through this mysterious and rocky road called life.

We do not underestimate the power of the young mind. We are aware that there are many things that they too can teach us. They are active agents (every individual is). It is by making meaningful connections and opening the doors for dialogue and candid conversations, as well as dynamic interactions, that we seek to work together to build a bright future.

Why drama and theater arts? Because of the art of “story-telling” and giving people a “voice”. Story-telling in Africa, as in all cultures, is a powerful traditional social tool. Historically, people would create stories to help make sense of the world, to disseminate a pertinent and important message, to educate and raise awareness. You can give facts, and facts are necessary. But the power of art and of telling (performing) a story is that it appeals to the heart as well as the mind. It creates empathy and a more humane understanding.

Drama and theater arts helps one learn how to express herself or himself; we learn how to lift our “voice”.

Drama and theater arts provide a collective platform for reflection. Being in a group that uses art for social change gives people the opportunity to “spark new ideas, catalyze critical thinking, elicit new positive actions, inspire individuals and create visions”. (www.artforsocialchange.net)

Using a medium that is proactive, interactive and entertaining ignites enthusiasm in the youth. This is why pop culture has such a huge impact on young people. We use “edutainment”, which is a combination of education and entertainment, to facilitate a forum for the youth so that they have a safe space whereby they can address obstacles they face.

Through this project our mission is to empower, liberate perceptions and emancipate minds.

Young people are the future and through this project we aim to pass on the torch of the wisdom we ourselves have gained and that of which was passed onto us. And we hope that they too shall “pay it forward” causing a ripple effect that will resonate throughout the nation.
